Welcome To Dwarven Gardening!

Why is this blog called Dwarven Gardening?

Garden Dwarfs (Gartenzwerge) or garden gnomes are lawn ornament figurines of small humanoid creatures based on the mythological creatures. In the late 18th century, gnome-like figurines made of wood or porcelain, known by names including "dwarves", had become popular household decorations in some parts of Europe. According to folklore, these whimsical characters with some magical abilities could help fields yield more produce, protect them from pests and keep thieves away. They are even said to bring their owners good luck and protect them from evil.

Dwarfs are a type of mythical being in Germanic folklore. Accounts of dwarfs vary significantly throughout history; however, they are commonly presented as living in mountains or stones and being skilled craftspeople. Dwarves are said to be excellent warriors and defenders of their strongholds. Fantasy Dwarves (especially those of J.R.R Tolkiens Middle Earth) tend to follow the mythical folklore depictions.

I have a small backyard garden. My idea is to bring together the protection of the garden gnome and the ‘small but mighty’ attitude of both the mythical and fantasy dwarves. With good luck and strength my goal is to bring you along my path in learning how to become self-sufficient with my garden.

So I welcome you to my journey as a backyard gardener.
